Although Native Americans lived in harmony with their natural world and placed great value on tribe, clan, and family, they often warred with other tribes.

 

These wars were mainly waged for land and the resources it had to offer. Tribes with meager or poor hunting grounds attempted to wrest control over land with more abundant buffalo herds from tribes that were hostile to them.

 

During colonial times, even tribes hostile to each other joined in alliances in order to defend their land against the “white man”. And these alliances had to battle other Indian tribes who had allied themselves with the colonial powers (England, Spain, France, and Brazil).
