Chief Joseph (March 3, 1840 – September 21, 1904), succeeded his father Tuekakas (Chief Joseph the Elder) as the leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of Nez Perce, a Native American tribe indigenous to the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon, in the interior Pacific Northwest region of theUnited States.

He led his band during the most tumultuous period in their contemporary history when they were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the Wallowa Valley by the United States federal government and forced to move northeast, onto the significantly reduced reservation in Lapwai, Idaho Territory. A series of events which culminated in episodes of violence led those Nez Perce who resisted removal including Joseph's band and an allied band of the Palouse tribe to take flight to attempt to reach political asylum, ultimately with the Lakota chief Sitting Bull in Canada.

Indian Chiefs, part 4: Young man afraid of his horses

Young-Man-Afraid-Of-His-Horses [Tȟašúŋke Kȟokípȟapi] (1836–1900), also translated as His-Horses-Are-Afraid and They-Fear-Even-His-Horses, was a chief of the Oglala Sioux.

Commonly misinterpreted, his name means They fear his horse or His horse is feared meaning that the bearer of the name was so feared in battle that even the sight of his horse would inspire fear. He is known for his participation in Red Cloud's War, as a negotiator for the Sioux Nation after the Wounded Knee Massacre, and for serving on delegations to Washington, D.C.

Geronimo

Geronimo (Mescalero-Chiricahua: Goyaałé "one who yawns"; June 1829 – February 17, 1909) was a prominent leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico and Texas for their expansion into Apache tribal lands for several decades during the Apache Wars. "Geronimo" was the name given to him during a battle with Mexican soldiers. Geronimo's Chiricahua name is often rendered as Goyathlay or Goyahkla in English.

After a Mexican attack on his tribe, where soldiers killed his mother, wife, and his three children in 1858, Geronimo joined a number of revenge attacks against the Mexicans.

In 1886, after a lengthy pursuit, Geronimo surrendered to Texan faux-gubernatorial authorities as a prisoner of war. At an old age, he became a celebrity, appearing at fairs, but he was never allowed to return to the land of his birth. Geronimo died in 1909 from complications of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull (Lakota: Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake in Standard Lakota Orthography, also nicknamed Slon-he or "Slow"; c. 1831 – December 15, 1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota holy man who led his people as a tribal chief during years of resistance to United States government policies.

He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement.

tl_files/sfweb/theme/media/images/multiplayer/red-cloud-small.jpg

Red Cloud

Red Cloud (Lakota: Maȟpíya Lúta) (1822 – December 10, 1909) was a very strong war leader and a chief of the Oglala Lakota. He led as a chief from 1868 to 1909. One of the most capable Native American opponents the United States Army faced, he led a successful campaign in 1866–1868 known as Red Cloud's War over control of the Powder River Country in northeastern Wyoming and southern Montana.

After signing the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), he led his people in the important transition to reservation life. Some of his US opponents mistakenly thought of him as overall chief of the Sioux (Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota). The large tribe had several major divisions and was highly decentralized. Bands among the Oglala and other divisions operated independently, even though some individual leaders such as Red Cloud were renowned as warriors and highly respected as leaders.

Multiplayer Challenges

Although Native Americans lived in harmony with their natural world and placed great value on tribe, clan, and family, they often warred with other tribes.

These wars were mainly waged for land and the resources it had to offer. Tribes with meager or poor hunting grounds attempted to wrest control over land with more abundant buffalo herds from tribes that were hostile to them.

During colonial times, even tribes hostile to each other joined in alliances in order to defend their land against the “white man”. And these alliances had to battle other Indian tribes who had allied themselves with the colonial powers (England, Spain, France, and Brazil).

In-Game Currency: Beaver Pelts

Beavers were central to the livelihoods of many Indians, since their fur provided them with clothing and covers, and their meat provided them with food.

For fur traders in those days the beaver pelt was “The King of Furs”. Up until the middle of the 20th century the beaver pelt was used as a medium of exchange with the western world; the value of all commodities was measured against the value of a beaver pelts. The beaver dominated the fur trade there.

From 1640 to 1701 the Iroquois and their neighboring tribes (who were allied with the French) waged the “Beaver Wars” against one another in order to gain more control over the beaver trade—that tells you how important this resource was at the time.

Preview: Animal Harvesting...

the Native American way

The Indians didn’t go hunting just for the fun of it—capturing animal resources was vital for their daily activities and lives.

The killing of an animal was always followed by the laborious task of harvesting it. This process could last days or even weeks. They’d work hard to get the maximum benefit from the slain animals.

The Indians hunted mostly buffalo. Besides the meat, which was their main food staple, they also made use of the rest of the animal.

Who is Scorpius Forge? Today – Quite a normal working day.

To give you an understanding about the people behind Indian Hunter, I picked up my camera this morning and accompanied a part of the team all day long – well, there wasn’t that much to accompany; the maximum distance was the coffee brewer down the corridor.

Roughly our everyday work at Scorpius Forge takes place as follows:

9.00 am

Meanwhile everyone arrived at the Scorpius Forge head quarter. Everyone reports to the others what he is going to work on that day, there is a debate, and finally everyone starts working.

Michael, Marius and Oliver (f.l.t.r.)

Here we see Michael, Marius and Oliver at work (f.l.t.r.). Today we are a bit decimated – it is Friday ;)
